چکیده

Both music and love are conspicuously absent from the public soundscapes of Hargeysa, Somaliland. But behind closed doors, people listen to songs. In doing so, these lonely sufferers hopefuls make sense various challenges. Using accounts a cross section Somalilanders, I show that solitary listening practices open into uniquely intimate transformative opportunities for dareen-wadaag (feeling sharing). These critically depend both on listeners’ attention intention, culturally elaborated affective affordances songs’ “voice”—a voice is conceived as “love incarnate” models intimacy. short, listeners do not just songs; they love. Their call anthropological more fully account relationship between situated ears voices, well complex interrelation sound, affect, subjectivity.
